Pastor Amalia Vagts and Pastor Mateo Chavez receive Grand Canyon Synod International Travel Scholarships

The Grand Canyon Synod International Travel Scholarship is made available by a GCS pastor and spouse because they are grateful for such experiences in their own lives and ministries, and they want to make similar opportunities available to others.

This years’ recipients are Pastor Amalia Vagts and Pastor Mateo Chavez. Pastor Vagts will be using the funds to travel to Palestine and Israel with Wartburg Seminary. Pastor Chavez will be traveling to Mexico City to spend time at the Augsburg Lutheran Seminary there.

2023 ELCA World Hunger Education and Networking Grant application cycle is now open

Hunger Education and Networking Grants are one of the ways ELCA World Hunger accompanies congregations, synods, organizations, partners and local teams throughout the US and the Caribbean.

Lilly Foundation's Compelling Preaching Initiative interest form due 3/1/2023

Lilly Endowment is pleased to announce its Compelling Preaching Initiative. The primary aim of this initiative is to cultivate practices among aspiring and active preachers that can help them to proclaim the gospel to a variety of audiences in more engaging and effective ways.

In this open and competitive national initiative, eligible charitable organizations may submit proposals for grants of up to $1.25 million that may be used for up to a five-year period to develop new and/or enhance existing programs that present promising strategies to further the aim of the initiative. ELCA Disability Ministries: Grants update and tAble

We had an AMAZING response to our most recent opportunity to receive a grant from ELCA Disability Ministries! Our review team will soon begin the process of narrowing down the first 30 applications we received to the top 5 that will receive grants of up to $10,000.

We also wanted to share that the Youth Gathering will waive fees for the first 200 registrants who attend the tAble.

Last Round of Vital Right Shaped Ministries’ Vitality and Innovation Grants Awarded

On June 16, 2022, four congregations and ministries in the Grand Canyon Synod were awarded a total of $16,000 in 2022 VRSM Vitality and Innovation grants: Vida Nueva, Lutheran Campus Ministry (ASU, UA, NAU), Central Lutheran’s ACE Program (Adult Community Education), and Trinity Lutheran’s Food Bank.

Parts of the grant were funded by the Lilly 3E initiative with Rocky Mountain Synod, as well as our synod’s Growing Generosity Appeal, which thanks to the generosity of individuals and congregations now exceeds $600,000.

Grand Canyon Synod Manna Grants deadline: 7/31/2022

Thanks to a gift from Ascension Lutheran Church in Paradise Valley honoring the legacy of member Orpha Hoganson, Manna Grants are available for new and continuing projects that work to alleviate hunger and demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion in leadership and decision-making.

All organized congregations, New Starts, Synodically Authorized Worshipping Communities (SAWCs), and Special Ministries of the Grand Canyon Synod are eligible to apply by the 7/31/2022 deadline. More info at gcsynod.org/manna-grant.
