Welcoming Deacon Laura Book: Strengthening Youth Ministry in the Grand Canyon Synod

The Grand Canyon Synod is thrilled to announce Deacon Laura Book as the new Project Manager of the Synod Youth Advisory Team (SYAT). Deacon Laura brings a wealth of experience, energy, and passion for youth ministry to this important role, where she will support and grow youth ministry connections across the synod.

In her role, Deacon Laura will:

  • Support the synod office in youth ministry and faith formation initiatives.

  • Evaluate and develop materials for the youth ministry website.

  • Build synod-wide connections between youth ministry leaders and create a digital platform for collaboration.

  • Lead SYAT monthly meetings and assist with other gatherings.

  • Guide the SYAT team in achieving goals and meeting deadlines.

  • Assist with grant writing and reporting to enhance synod-wide youth ministry.

Deacon Laura’s lifelong dedication to youth and young adult ministry began in Luther League in rural Ohio. Her journey has taken her from directing vocational retreats and high school programs at Trinity Lutheran Seminary to creating programs like Toddler Time for preschool families. Locally, she teaches confirmation classes and plays flute in an intergenerational ensemble at Desert Cross Lutheran Church.

Her deep commitment to faith formation extends beyond church walls. During the school year, she works with high school students in special education. She and her husband, Pastor Thaddeus Book, moved to the Phoenix area in 2021 with their two sons. When not in ministry or school, the family enjoys spending time on the ball fields.

As Deacon Laura steps into this new role, she is eager to share her passion for God’s children, build meaningful connections, and help shape the future of youth ministry in the Grand Canyon Synod. Please join us in welcoming her to the team!
