Global Spotlight: Bishop Leila Ortiz, A ‘Luthercostal’ Trailblazer on the LWF Council
Bishop Leila Ortiz, the first Latina and ‘Luthercostal’ bishop in the ELCA, continues to inspire and lead with her groundbreaking work in the Metropolitan Washington DC Synod. Recently elected to the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Council, Bishop Ortiz shares her unique journey from a Pentecostal upbringing in Puerto Rico to her discovery of the “liberating, life-altering” theology of the Lutheran tradition. Her story reflects a dynamic blend of Pentecostal spirituality and Lutheran theological grounding, which she calls being ‘Luthercostal.’
In her new role on the LWF Council, Ortiz brings a fresh perspective on the challenges facing churches in the U.S. and globally. She believes her path, much like the biblical figure Esther, is divinely timed for “such a time as this,” offering leadership during periods of crisis and renewal. With a commitment to justice, grace, and empowering others, Bishop Ortiz is dedicated to supporting congregations and leaders in embracing imperfection while fostering relationships rooted in the gospel.
Her journey reflects the rich diversity and transformative power of our faith community, reminding us all of the possibilities that emerge when we walk together with God.
