Bishop Eaton: “You Are a Superpower” in Defending the Vulnerable

ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has issued a strong response to the recent executive order on immigration, which rolls back protections for vulnerable individuals in places like churches, schools, and hospitals. In a passionate video message, Bishop Eaton urges Lutherans across the country to take action:

“You are a superpower. They don’t expect thousands and thousands of ordinary people in our pews and in our communities to join together for this action. So, get motivated and get organized.”

Bishop Eaton reminds us that as followers of Christ, we are called to stand with the most vulnerable among us. She encourages congregations and individuals to raise their voices, advocate for those impacted, and stay engaged in efforts to challenge harmful policies.

While the ELCA churchwide organization is not positioned to join lawsuits against this policy change, Eaton notes that congregations that can demonstrate direct harm from this executive order may have standing to participate. She emphasizes that our collective witness remains critical:

“We will continue to speak out against harmful policies and in support of our marginalized neighbors.”

We are church together—and together, we can make a difference. Watch Bishop Eaton’s full message here and download the video here. Let us continue to live out our faith by advocating for justice and standing with those in need.
