Bishop Eaton Urges Biden Administration: Address the Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), has addressed President Biden with a heartfelt plea for immediate intervention in the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank. In a letter dated December 4, 2024, Bishop Eaton emphasized the devastating impact of recent Israeli laws banning the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from operating in occupied territories and urged the administration to ensure compliance with U.S. and international laws. “Without dramatic intervention, nothing but a ghastly future is possible for the remaining 2 million Palestinians in Gaza,” Bishop Eaton wrote. The ongoing conflict has resulted in catastrophic loss of life, with over 44,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza alone and over 104,000 injured. UNRWA, which has provided critical humanitarian assistance to Palestinians for over 75 years, now faces crippling restrictions.

Bishop Eaton called for the U.S. government to restore humanitarian relief, hold all parties accountable under the U.S. Foreign Assistance Act, and oppose the criminalization of UNRWA’s work, which could set a dangerous precedent in international humanitarian law.

Rooted in Lutheran theology, Bishop Eaton reflected on the Lord’s Prayer, urging Christians to consider how the Palestinian people can receive their “daily bread” amid systemic barriers to humanitarian aid. The ELCA remains committed to walking alongside the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL) and supporting ministries like Augusta Victoria Hospital.

This call to action underscores the ELCA’s dedication to advocating for peace, justice, and the dignity of all people. Lutherans are encouraged to pray, stay informed, and advocate for policies that honor basic human rights.
