Answer the Call: Help Save Lives During Arizona’s Extreme Heat
As temperatures rise across Arizona, the call to care for our neighbors becomes more urgent. Arizona Faith Network (AFN) is now hiring staff and recruiting volunteers for its 2025 Heat Respite and Relief Program, running May through September. This vital initiative provides cooling centers for unsheltered and vulnerable individuals facing the dangers of extreme summer heat.
Paid and volunteer positions are now open at locations in Glendale, Phoenix, and Tempe. These roles support the day-to-day operation of local Heat Respite Centers—offering safety, water, rest, and compassion to those most at risk.
Open roles include:
Heat Respite Site Lead (17 positions)
Heat Respite Site Assistant (25 positions)
Safety Specialist (4 positions)
Heat Respite Volunteer (unlimited roles)
Whether you’re available for a full-time seasonal role or a few hours a week to volunteer, your presence matters. These sites serve as modern-day shelters in the wilderness, offering refuge and dignity to the weary and overheated.
As Lutherans, we are called to love and serve our neighbor, especially the vulnerable. This program is an invitation to embody that love through action and presence—helping create safe, welcoming environments that uphold the dignity of every person.
