200 Lutherans, 40 Lawmakers, 3 Bills: A Day of Faithful Advocacy
On Monday, February 10, 2025, 200 advocates from 29 legislative districts across Arizona gathered at the State Capitol for Lutheran Day at the Legislature—a day dedicated to faith-driven advocacy. United in our call to love and serve our neighbors, we met with over 40 lawmakers to build relationships and speak out on critical policy issues.
The day began in Wesley Bolin Plaza, where we shared breakfast and coffee, reconnecting with fellow advocates. Pastor Brian Weinberger, chairman of the LAMA Policy Council, emceed the event, and Bishop Deborah Hutterer led us in a time of devotion and prayer.
We were honored to hear from Senate President Warren Petersen (R, LD14), House Minority Leader Oscar De los Santos (D, LD11), Rev. Rock Fremont from Shepherd of the Hills UCC, and Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest CEO Connie Phillips. Their remarks highlighted the essential role that people of faith play as nonpartisan advocates for justice and fairness for all God’s people.
District Coordinators played a key role in preparing participants, organizing meetings, and ensuring that every advocate was well-equipped with talking points. From there, groups set out to meet with their legislators, register for the Request to Speak system, and explore the Capitol grounds. Our home base for the day was the Senate Majority Caucus Room, where participants engaged in RTS training, enjoyed lunch from UMOM’s Helpings Café & Catering, and connected with lawmakers, including Senators Denise “Mitzi” Epstein (LD12), Rosanna Gabaldón (LD21), and Priya Sundareshan (LD18).
A new feature this year was an optional guided tour of the Capitol, providing historical context on Arizona’s government. Additionally, Bishop Deborah Hutterer and Pastor Brian Weinberger opened the Senate and House sessions in prayer, and Sen. John Kavanagh (R, LD03) and Rep. Patty Contreras (D, LD12) introduced our groups in their respective chambers.
By the end of the day, participants reported forming new friendships, engaging in meaningful conversations with lawmakers, and deepening their understanding of how faith calls us to advocate for justice.
